an improvement, but not for much August 4, 2010 Raul Sanchez (USA) if you are planning on buying an external mic, chances are you are not happy with the built in mic that your camcorder has, in my experience buying this mic has an improvement but not for much.
sound quality does improve, you dont get as much background noise with it, but you still get enough for it to be annoying. The directionality aspect of it is limited, you will still pick up some sounds coming from the back of the mic, but that is to be expected with directional mics, my problem with it is that it does not do enough to prevent sound from the sides, its just not good enough.
for the price at hand, you might use it for some amateur filming, but if youre somewhat serious about sound quality, i suggest investing in a better mic.
Much Better Sound on my Home Vids May 5, 2010 Jimbo (Seattle, WA USA) This provides much better sound on my Sony DMV, only problem is it doesn't work in the mic/light holder on top of the camera because the shoe is different, and if you stick it up there it sticks out to where it shows up on the screen when I use my attached wide angle lens. Still, I can make it work with some kind of bracket. I look forward to using it outside more to see how the directionality helps eliminate noise there too. I would say it is a good deal.
Good sound April 27, 2010 Brandon Johnson (Dallas, TX) Good clean sound from this mic. I noticed a tiny amount of high-frequency noise - same amount no matter what distance from the camera. Could be interference from the 30-foot connection i used.
Great addition, small problems keep it from being perfect March 16, 2010 Michael Bock (Irvine, CA United States) I didn't realize that the main benefit of an external microphone is actually eliminating and clarifying noises, rather than making them louder. Or, at least the main benefit of this microphone was. It cleared up a lot of the "gunk" that I was hearing, and made the sounds clearer, more distinct, and less muddled/muffled.
It's compact, looks professional, and works great. It doesn't work with a mini-advanced hot shoe, but thankfully using a regular one it doesn't appear nearly as obnoxious as some models.
Some problems: NO ON/OFF LIGHT! You have to be kidding me! I have to play back a clip to double check to see if the microphone is working? That's insane! I really don't know how they left this off. But, assuming you're obsessive compulsive about the battery, I guess it won't bother you too much.
excellent with Canon video camera March 5, 2010 Michael Baish (Alaska) Like my Shure SM-58,vocal range can be adjusted by how close you sing into it and by turning it in the holder the stereo can be balanced with the guitar so recording stereo with my FS-200 Canon video camera gives me a nice product for Youtube etc.
